ON@TCC

 Hello Readers....

Today I'm presenting about the great story One Night @ The Call Center by the most famous writer Chetan Bhagat. This novel is known as Popular literature. The book was first published in 2005. It takes place during one night, during which all of the leading characters confront some aspect of themselves or their lives they would like to change. He wrote such a wonderful thing in the story. He was the best writer in his time period.

This novel writer wants to give message to the Indians that who working in call centre they just get good salary but it not give it a opportunity to do something else or for their skills. So this blog is my academic task given by Dr. Dilip barad sir from Department of English Bhavnagar University. So it's following the rule of an ideal plot. The story uses a literal deus ex machina, when the characters receive a phone call from God. So in Literature using the term Deus ex machina is the weakness of the author.

Chetan Bhagat is an Indian author, columnist, screenwriter, television personality and motivational speaker, known for his English language dramely novels about young urban middle - class Indians. He is contemporary writer who has earned a different name and made their distinction in the literary word. Bhagat writes columns for popular English and Hindi newspapers, including the times of India and Dainik Bhaskar which is focusing on youth areas and issues used on national development.

Here are some of the topics which I would like to discuss. These points are :--

# Globalization and One Night @ the Call Center :--

Globalization has changed the blood and soul of all these things, the lifestyle of the people , behaviour of the people, each and every aspect of life. The Twenty First century is the age of globalization and India cannot go away from the impacts of such changes. Globalization has considerably benefited the urban part of developing India. As for India Globalization has become a buzzword after 1991 and day by day this buzzing is getting louder. It has touched all the domains of Indian life and experience.

"Globalization is no longer a theoretical concept; it is a glaring reality, impinging upon almost every aspect of human existence" (P. Sam, and G. Sam. 1044-1045).

Even in the name of the character also we can see globalization like Syam Mehara called Sam Macy.

In the book all six characters, who work in one call center, and also every character suffer in their personal life. The themes involve the anxieties and insecurities of the rising Indian middle class including questions about career inadequacy, marriage, family, conflict in changing India, and the relationship of the young Indian middle class to both executives and ordinary clients whom they serve in the United states.

Chetan Bhagat's most of the novels deals with contemporary issues. Young urban middle-class people. He is a twentieth century writer, and knows well that how to sold his books. In his novel One Night at the Call Centre, there is some aspects of modern India. People are working in call centres, so, title itself suggest that writer included several contemporary issues of modern India. Globalization is an economic development, everyone is struggle with their personal angst, the problems which are the causes of globalization.

So let’s see the characteristics of self -help books. The following are the characteristic of the Self - help books :

Identifies a common problem

Shares personal experiences

Treats readers like equals

Backs up claims with research

Admits privileges or advantages

Points out what has worked for specific individuals, but doesn’t promise that the advice will work for everyone.

After reading the self help book we should feel empowered. Something about the world or our perception of it should make a little more sense.we should feel capable of doing anything.

So let's see how the novel One Night @ the Call Center is the self help book.

In Chetan Bhagat all books we see that he gives one activity on the first page of the novel begins, this page shows the self-help book's most important Characteristics.

The book reveals how makeover culture traps Americans in endless cycles of self-invention and overwork as they struggle to stay ahead of a rapidly restructuring economic order. A lucid treatment of the modern obsession with work and self-improvement, it will strike a chord with its acute diagnosis of the self-help trap and its sharp suggestions for how we can address the alienating conditions of modern work and family life. The main claim of the book is that while the self help culture promises liberation and self mastery , it actually propels its adherents into a cycle of endless work on the self, a process aptly captured under the heading of the " Belabored self ".

In the book ahead we read the conversation of god and all characters and we find that everyone knows how they solve their problem. But no one knew that, because they all never listened to their inner voice.

Episode of god that saw that we need only know about ourselves. Not ignore our inner voice. Whenever we all have some problem that time we try to listen to ourselves, what we want? And how we choose the right way. In the end we see that all characters find their solution because now they all know how to face the problem and choose the right way of life. We also need to listen to our inner voice and face the problem and then get a solution to the problem.

# Popular literature and One Night@ The Call Center :--

If we think about popular literature then people always say that popular literature is not valuable. But in a way that is half truth. Because there are some points which are always notable. If anything is ' Popular' then that is not meaningless. In a way popular literature is not considered great literature.

Because it lacks something, that is the high seriousness or we can't find various interpretations. There is no possibility of various interpretations and aspects.

What the popular writer thinks how to tell and the legendary writer thinks about What is to be told ? Many people also say that the Popular literature is like fast food. We can say that Chetan's God becomes a mouthpiece for his self help - 'listen to the inner call'. It is about inner call or inner voice. A self-help book is one that is written with the intention to instruct its readers on solving personal problems. God’s call it is a kind of a help, or it can be interpreted in many ways. God’s call pays the path, he shows just the path, but then all characters help themselves. In this way we can take this book as a self help book also.

# Comparative study of Narative structure on on@TCC.

One night @ the call center is a controversial novel. The novel's narrative framework in which we can find dream sequence. God has a dream or a real meeting, but the storyteller does not understand it.Chetan Bhagat himself started the novel that he was on a train from Kanpur to Delhi and he met a woman who told him the story. So the protagonist describes it by dark. Here is a frame description.Unknown Lady-> Chetan Bhagat-> Shyam-> Reader also becomes problematic because it takes a different kind of understanding. If we compare it to Yan Martell's pie of life, then it is also the same narrative structure.

Chetan Bhagat makes very good use of prologue and epilogue in his novel. In prologue, writer himself comes as character and talks with the reader. The same thing can find in life of pi in which Yann Martel Canadian writer meet the person. Both writer present in prologue and told that how they got inspiration. In the both work they meet person who told them stories and after that they collect deep information about it before writing novel. In epilogue there is alternative reading. After hearing story of pi Japanese agents not belived on it at that time pie told another story in which animals replace by humans. In the same happens in on@cc lady gave alternative reading by replacing God lines with Military uncle. So like this both work has Same narrative structure.

There is an aspect of self-help in the book as the author invites readers two identify aspects of themselves and their lives that make them angry and that they would like to change. Here we see that all characters present the real life situation of the people. In the story we see that character of Shyam, who almost lost his love. Character of Radhika is in an unhappy marriage with a demanding mother-in-law. Character of Military Uncle, who wants to talk to his grandson. Character of Mr.Bakshi, who is the boss of the call center, all hate them because of their cruel and somehow sadistic behavior.

So here we see that all characters suffer in their life. Also these are all problems we find in our real life and also in society. With help of this type of book we find a solution to the problem. Chetan Bhagat’s present the real life situation of the people and how they all manage their lives.

Here the author has tried to portray the world of the call centers. Book presents the post-modern phenomena. In this book we find that every character suffers from a different problem, but then they all live and fight with their situation. They all struggle in different ways. Chetan Bhagat shows the reality of people’s life and they all live their lives.

# Popular Literature and ON@TCC

Popular literature has this kind of structure of the works. In the one night at the call center shows the solutions of the problems through character of God. It has not intellectual solution of problems. The call from God is not deeply connected anywhere. The solution of problems not acceptable in social formation. It not challenges people to think upon their believes. The solution of problems goes like drama. It not gave deep philosophy and intellectual solution. Virginia Woolf 's novel has deep intellectual and philosophical ideals. It shows the intellectual growth of writer while here writer still not go deeply in the novel. The solution of problems are like makeover not real intellectual growth of people.

Chetan Bhagat consider as the popular writer because he deals with problems of common people. He using very simple English language because of it many people can start reading English novels. It makes him popular writer.

The novel One Night @ The begins with the epilogy and one interesting exercise.

In the novel One Night@The Call Center is an unreliable narrative structure in the novel because from the very beginning the story is narrated by a strange woman to Chetan Bhagat in the train. Then she forced him to write it as his second book without mentioning her name. Chetan Bhagat then wrote the story and used one character Shyam for narration. In this way it becomes unreliable. Here we can find the similarity of narrative structure between Life of Pi and One Night @call centre. In the life of Pi, the protagonist told the story to the writer, just like the woman in the train telling the story to Chetan Bhagat. There are two stories being told and it was upon the writer that which they select to write, the one is with God or the one without God. In both the cases the writer chose to write a story with God. So this is the structure of both the novels.

Thank you...
